The length of the flight path is now also displayed.
Sometimes you might want to inspect possibe flight paths in three dimensions. This is now possible with the new KML file export functionality. Just click the Download link under "Settings" to save a KML file ready to be dropped into Google Earth.
Often the calculated search path looked a bit zigzaggy and not optimal. No more! With the improved algorithm paths now are more efficient and more direct. It's not perfect and there are weird edge cases but it should be a big improvement.
Location search has been requested for a long time. Here it is.
Flying outside the Alps? No problem as the tool now works worldwide!
Flying outside of Switzerland? The site now works for the complete Alps from France to Slovenia.
For paragliders in Switzerland we have integrated the excellent Swisstopo map layer.
You can now specify the start altitude if you expect to catch a thermal and be able to start your path high up in the air.
The tool is now ready for mobile.
Created.
The digital elevation model is based on 3 arc second data from Jonathan de Ferranti's View Finder Panoramas-Project.
Topographic maps are provided by OpenTopoMap and based on data from the OpenStreetMap project. Topographic maps for Switzerland are provided by Swisstopo.
Search functionality is provided by the photon API.
Software used: Ruby on Rails, Leaflet, d3.js. ...
Amit Patel’s page on pathfinding algorithms was super helpful.

The computational resources needed for the model calculation grow rapidly with the covered (flyable) area. Therefore the model is limited to an area within 20 km of the takeoff site.
hikeandfly.org is a hike & fly planer for Paragliders.
The tool calculates the region a paraglider can reach in theory by gliding from a chosen starting location and elevation. The calculation rests on the assumption of these conditions:
The tool is meant to supplement flight preparations especially for hike & fly type trips in the mountains in addition to things like the weather forecast, aeronautical charts, and common sense.
The tool currently covers the earth's land surface except Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, and a few remote islands. If you are missing coverage for a certain area or if you find some strange results please contact me.
